Henry Spencer Moore (30 July 1898 – 31 August 1986) was a great English artist.
He is best known for his monumental semi-abstract bronze sculptures which are found throughout the world.
In addition to sculptures, Moore produced many drawings, including a series depicting Londoners sheltering from the Blitz during the Second World War, and other graphic works on paper.
His forms are typically abstractions of the human figure, typically depicting mother and child or reclining figures.
Moore’s works are generally evocative of the female body, apart from a phase in the 1950s in which he sculpted family groups.
Its shapes are generally perforated or contain empty spaces.
Many interpreters compare the undulating shape of his reclining figures to the landscape and hills of his hometown, Yorkshire.
Moore was born in Castleford, the son of a miner.
He became known for his large-scale abstract sculptures in carved marble and cast bronze, and was instrumental in introducing a particular form of modernism to the United Kingdom.
Later, his ability to carry out large-scale commissions made him exceptionally wealthy. Despite this, he lived frugally; most of the money earned went towards the creation of the Henry Moore Foundation, which continues to support education and the promotion of the arts.
