Vintage Design
Reclaimed industrial pendant lights that were salvaged from a school sports hall in Gloucestershire, United Kingdom. The lights were set into the ceiling space and were sat above a plastic prismatic panel so were not visible from the room itself.
Manufactured by The Benjamin Electric Company Limited circa 1950.
The vintage vitreous enamel shades are in excellent condition due to bing enclosed in the ceiling space for the entirety of their lives.
There is an unusual detail to the lower shade which is a hole that has been factory installed, these were setup with an B22 lamp holder and each light had an emergency circuit so the second lamp could illuminate in the event of a power outage. These have been removed and we have left the shades with the hole as per the images.
Benjamin Electric called these Mobilux Dispersive Reflectors and were classed as an over-lamp reflector due to their design which enabled the full removal of the main reflector canopy during operation without the need to disconnect or remove the lamp making maintenance extremely easy.
The industrial pendant lights have a wonderful heavy cast iron top section with the makers details displaying “BENJAMIN ELECTRIC LTD” and “PAT No 258211”, the mid and lower sections are constructed from heavy gauge spun steel and vitreous enamel coated “CRYSTEEL” grey outer and white inners providing an extremely durable finish that is also very efficient at reflecting light.
