This French walnut marquetry folding game box from the early twentieth century is for checkers and backgammon. It is finely constructed with dovetailed corners, inset hinges, and a locking brass hook on each side. The checker board side of the box displays individual squares of pear wood with alternating ebonized squares to form the classic playing surface. At each end of the board a rectangle is outlined where captured pieces are placed. The opposite side of the box when open is a backgammon board with a felt playing surface, The box measures 28.5 inches long, 20.75 inches wide, and 2 inches high when opened. Included are 40 wooden playing pieces for checkers and backgammon, two leather shakers, and a pair of dice, circa 1920.
