This English Regency style corner chair provides an excellent seated vantage point. It is made of walnut, circa 1900 – 1925, and is still super stylish 120 years later.
The design of the centering crest on the rounded back and pierced splat is stunning. The arms end in relief-carved scrolled ends, and the chair sits on ball turned supports. The seat is pointed at the front and the back curves. The chair rests on cylindrical tapering legs that are capped with casters. It is a whimsical addition to an interior. The corner chair appeared as far back as 1700, but became wildly popular by the second half of the 18th century. They were used principally in bedrooms and designed for comfort. They eventually became seating in public spaces like taverns and other establishments. This early 20th century example is in keeping with the corner chair’s history of comfort. The chair is reupholstered in a neutral beige woven fabric that covers the seat-cushion. This is a wonderful addition to a number of interior styles.
